Travel Information

Göttingen is situated in the southernmost part of Lower Saxony in the geographical centre of Germany, thus, it is easily accessible by car (via the motorway A7 and the federal roads B3 and B27) or by train and airplane. There are several direct train connections from Hamburg, Hannover, Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich.

Directions

By Car

Göttingen lies at the Autobahn A7 (Hannover-Kassel). Take the exit 73 (Göttingen) and follow the road. Once you pass under a bridge near the train station turn right. This street is called "Bürgerstraße" and will take you from the western entrance of the city center to the southern entrance where you arrive at "Hiroshimaplatz". Passing Hiroshimaplatz and following the street you arrive at the Historic Observatory on the left side after some meters.

By Train/ Bus

You can reach Göttingen directly with the ICE (high-speed train) from the directions Berlin, Hamburg, Hannover, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Munich. To find a connection, visit the website of the German railway company Deutschen Bahn AG.

From Göttingen main station, you can either take a taxi (for about 5€), a bus or simply walk (about 2 km). Bus line 21 (direction Zietenterrassen über Bahnhof) takes you directly to Hiroshimaplatz whereas 41/42 (direction Weende-Ost / Papenberg) take you to Kornmarkt from where you may walk for about 5 minutes. Bus 155 (direction Duderstadt) also brings you to Hiroshimaplatz but this line is less frequent. Departure times are available from the bus schedule.

Coming from Kornmarkt, follow the street Lange-Geismar-Straße until the next intersection and turn right (Kurze-Geismar-Straße). Follow this street for one block and you arrive at Hiroshimaplatz.
From Hiroshimaplatz follow Geismar-Landstraße passing by a skyscraper (Neues Rathaus) and you will see the Historic Observatory after 50 meters on the left hand side.

By Plane

The closest airports to Göttingen with European and International travel connections are Hannover Airport (HAJ) and Frankfurt (Main) Airport (FRA).

From Hannover Airport take the metro (S-Bahn) to Hannover station (Hauptbahnhof) and then the InterCityExpress to Göttingen (total travel time about 1 hour). Direct connections via InterCityExpress exist from Frankfurt (Main) Airport to Göttingen (travel time 2 hours).
